My beautiful baby is ten years old but we still call him puppy. He has just been diagnosed with Cushings Disease and we are devastated. There's no cure but today we started some pretty powerful medication to help him feel better. The pills are so toxic that you need to wear gloves to handle them and he has to be very closely watched for any adverse reaction.

When the kids were little we'd sing 'How much is that doggie in the window?' I'd never had a pet as a child and always fobbed my kids off with 'they make too much mess' so it came as a great surprise to all when I fell hook, line and sinker for a cute little bundle of fur in a pet shop window in Adelaide, many, many miles from home. Less than an hour later he was in the hull of a Qantas plane and on his way to Sydney to rule our hearts and our home.

The little doggie in the window has brought such joy! It's hard not to let fears of what's to come spoil our time together now but the pain is new, raw and chewing me up.

Dragonfly Dreams QuickPage Freebie

I can understand the current trend of plain, simply textured papers as a reaction to the OTT grunge fashion of a little while back & they are easy to scrap with but there's no need to fear bold papers. A great paper can act as a quick page doing lots of the work for you. This page took just a few minutes & apart from the frames, used only one ellie. The effect is dramatic & bold but not fussy. Experiment & have fun with different styles!

Dragonfly Dreams Plain Paper Freebie

I had a chat with Sue today (excellent company though a tad mad). It went like this:

SERIOUS SUE: The downloads for the plain paper packs are much higher. We really need more plain papers for Dragonfly Dreams.

LAZY SUE: Naaahh! They (that's YOU - the good, the bad & the funky) can just recolour the Little Goldfish plains. Making plain papers is sooo boring!

SILLY SUE: But not everyone has software that can recolour (my school kids don't) & it's so much easier when everything is together & such a PAIN when you have to search through your digi stash to find something that suits. It can ruin the creative flow and......

SILLIER SUE: (deep sigh) More plains it is then!

You might ask, why Silly Sue? Well, I have daughter duties tomorrow, mum duties all weekend, school work that reaches up to the skies & housework that's screaming to be done. So how will I ever meet my embellie duty to my digi friends if I keep getting distracted? Looks like an all nighter coming on!

Dragonfly Dreams Leaf Boat Freebie

If I were to write a report on myself it would go something like this:

'Susan is capable of excellent work when focused. However, she is easily distracted & makes quick pages & cute little leaf boat freebies instead of getting on with the main embellies pack. She must learn to stay on task.' LOL

This dear little leaf boat was inspired by the vintage illustration seen on the preview. The illustration isn't included in the kit (too olde world for this kit) but it does give you an idea of how the leaf boat could be used. The trail is from Little Goldfish & the dragonfly is part of the embellies pack that will be here when I stop getting distracted!

A Happy Ending

I woke this morning to a gorgeous email of support from Gunhild. She was happy to grant permission to post the alpha on Numb BUMM since she no longer has freebies on her blog. Gunhild is delighted that people like the alpha enough to download it.

AND... the dear, dear woman even sent a brand new freebie to post on my blog. How cute are these little tags (7 in the bag). I feel honoured BIG time with a smile that goes from ear to ear.

Ladies, your messages of support & encouragement have really bolstered my spirits & helped me put things into perspective. I'm at a loss for words to explain how much it means to me. You rallied when things were tough & your wise words made me see sense. I sincerely thank you.

Alpha Concerns

I've received two comments on my blog about Gunhild's Goldfish Alpha. I've emailed Gunhild and have removed the alpha while waiting for a reply.

I consider Gunhild a friend & would never deliberately do anything wrong by her.

Gunhild's TOU is commercial use. I could have included her alpha in the elements pack & given her credit in my Read Me. I thought that I was doing a nice thing by uploading the alpha separately with its original preview & Gunhild's TOU since very few people who download are bothered with the Read Me. Full credit was given to Gunhild. At no stage did I claim the work was mine.

When I originally made Little Goldfish (which Gunhild loved) I sent people to her blog to collect it. I now realise that for my remake I should have contacted Gunhild first or taken the easy 'legal' route of simply renaming files & including the alpha in the elements pack with a small credit to Gunhild in my Read Me. I apologise for doing it in a way which some people found offensive to the moral code of digital design but made more sense to me.

I have no idea why Craftcrave grabbed the alpha image instead of my paper pack as I'd intended.

I've been a victim of piracy myself. Many of my kits were uploaded to a Russian site where they were renamed. It stopped me designing for a while.

This has upset me greatly. I don't feel like finishing this kit or any other at the moment. I'm really sad.

PS: Black & white photos would look great scrapped with this kit.

PPS: Working with similar colours isn't easy for beginners but if you do it right the result is truly special. Don't OD on drop shadows. You'll get a much nicer result if you pay attention to lighting - both for individual elements & your finished product. Use lighting to lift the contrast & remember to customise your shadows ( default shadows are too harsh for this soft palette).

PPPS: No more long, lovely weekends of design until the holidays (3 more weeks). Meanwhile, I'll try to squeeze in time (when hubby's playing golf) to quality check & reupload an early kit or two.

Origami Jarmies Freebie Kit

Paua Shells Freebie

Paua shell is is the most colourful abalone shell & only found in New Zealand. We found these on Pink Beach (part of the Kauri Cliffs estate), so named after the zillions of tiny pink shells which cover it. The bright blue of the Paua shells stood out in the sea of pink & we collected several pretty specimens as souvenirs of our amazing holiday.

The shells are okay for personal & commercial use. The colours are in digi fashion right now & will be a pretty addition to beach kits. I've made them large so that you can cut alphas, buttons, jewellery or other embellies from them. Enjoy!

Luxury in New Zealand

Lucky, lucky me!! I've just spent a week in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Kauri Cliffs New Zealand. Hubby won a luxury holiday for four when he bought a box of Titleist golf balls (the best thing that's ever come out of all his golf). What complete & utter luxury! It's the place that movie stars & other celebs go to relax. Our villa looked over one of the three private beaches & a golf course with lush, greener than green grass. I was in awe of the gorgeous Hamptons style decor & the attention to detail took my breath away.

Tomorrow I'll extract a little CU souvenir for you, after a really long walk to try & work off some of the 5 course meals!

Commercial Use Ribbon

I scanned & extracted this pretty striped ribbon for my next kit & thought I'd offer it cu to anyone who would like it. Freebie designers struggle to build up their stash. Even if they had all the money in the world most TOUs require freebie makers to modify items significantly while some don't allow freebies at all. While they have good reasons for this, it makes it hard for those starting out in design.

This seems like an excellent time to thank The Scrapping Cop whose Cu Licence I couldn't be without & Gunhild, who is sadly taking a break from design. My stash, like most designers, is laden with their wonderful treasures.

Little Dreamer Add-on Freebie

Today I washed (well it's kinda urgent when you run out of undies & have to wear the scratchy ones at the bottom of the pile) & prepared enough lessons to get through the first two weeks of school. Helen is back from maternity leave & I can't wait to see her. She's the only one who really understands my passion for scrappin'!

This add-on has a quilt (what a labour of love that was), 9 separate animals, a tree & the tree cluster on the preview. It was all inspired by a pretty nursery mural (animals in a tree) which I knew you just had to have in this kit.

Little Dreamer Elements Freebie

We all love to take photos of our littlies when they are at their most adorable. Often it's when they are asleep! This kit is for scrapping those precious pics. Daisy Freebie Kit

Kyoto Add-on Freebie

Don't let tales of high costs frighten you away from experiencing Japan. It's a magnificent culture & so different from anywhere else in the world.

We grabbed $300 Jetstar tickets & had no complaints about the service. We spent 1 week in a teensy but immaculate apartment just outside Tokyo. This was residential Japan (not a tourist in sight) which was a great experience & cheap. The apartment was $100 a night, French perfumes (not fake) $30 & Aussie Merino wool jumpers $20. Hubby stocked up on clothes while I spent my money on papers, perfumes & calendars (they are amazing). We then headed down to Kyoto where we'd found a great weekday deal on the net for the Hotel Granvia (POSH). On weekends when the rate went right up we took off to Takayama (old Japan) & Hiroshima. Our JR Pass took us absolutely everywhere at speed & in great comfort so that we didn't need to spend an extra cent on transport. Food is expensive if you want to eat at restaurants designed for tourists or big Aussie style steaks but if you eat Japanese food ( YUMMY!!) it costs no more than in Australia. Hubby is a conservative eater (a pain in other words) but he loved the Japanese bakeries, the food halls in department stores & the food courts in shopping centres. Everything is so immaculate everywhere that we had no hesitation in buying from street stalls & markets, something I've never done before. The 3 weeks we spent in Japan cost us less than 3 weeks in Thailand, considered by many Aussies as a budget OS destination & while Thailand had a certain charm I'm not in a hurry to go back whereas I could quite happily live in Japan.

As for the Add-on, it's 'Surprise Bag' style (I loved the bag & couldn't wait to use it). There are 5 papers & 20 elements. When you combine the Add-on with the rest of the kit you'll find that many of the elements come in multiples of 3 (even the papers are 3x5), in true Japanese style.

It's all been uploaded to the DSO Colour Challenge Gallery (not an easy feat for such a techno dumbum) so if you haven't done a layout for the Challenge yet there are still a couple of days left. Click preview to see detail.

Kyoto Elements Freebie

Kim's palette reminded me of our beautiful room at the Granvia Hotel Kyoto. Japanese decor favours natural, restful colours like these (bright hues are reserved for kimonos & festivals) & natural timbers (very few places are painted). Our trip to Japan was amazing. It's high on my list of faves & I might blog about it & create a small add-on tomorrow itla (if the leg allows).

There are 27 elements (more than shown) with a shoji screen style frame, 3 yukatas (casual kimonos), bonsai, a lantern & even 2 pretty shopping bags because the packaging in Japan is so beautiful it is often a work of art. The calligraphy means 'dream'.

Kim B Needs a Hug Freebie

Kim B is my hero for so many reasons & she's been upset by an ignoramus (is this really a word?) so head on over to her blog for a great little lesson on what's involved in producing a Quality product & give her a BIG BIG hug.

I've bought quite a few CU goods since my 'nanna knee' decided that strolling around a shopping centre was off limits & a girl has gotta shop - right! Another reason is that sitting at the computer is so darned painful that taking some shortcuts with CU goodies has been a BIG help. BUT, I'm a fusspot (everyone at work will tell you I'm anal) & many of the products I've bought have gone straight to the recycle bin with angry expletives from me. Kim has explained some of the Quality problems but there are many more. My pet hates are over exposed & unevenly lit photographs with blurry bits & straight extractions of curved lines so that the item looks like it's been cut out by a kid. In my job as editor of school publications I spend my life cleaning up other people's mistakes & polishing the ordinary so I'm darned if I'll do this for my hobby as well.

Kim's stuff is ALWAYS the best, so good that I never need to check it. If we had Logie Awards for the digi industry she'd get 'Queen of Extractions' (imagine the fun photos she'd post of that night).

A few people have invited me to sell at their stores but I've declined gently, the truth being that I didn't respect the quality of their products. The day that Kim B says 'Come & work for me', I'll be a very happy numb bum (girl can dream - right).

This is turning into a much longer tale than I'd planned so to cut a long story short, Kim's sad face made me even more determined to support her by having another crack at the DSO Colour Challenge. Click preview to see detail. Hope you like the results.

Twilight Sunshine Backgrounds

Here's the paper part of the 'Sunshine' add-on, which is becoming more than an add-on but a little kit in its own right. They are soft grunge & made to work with the floral papers in the 'Meadow' kit. The front paper has the lyrics of John Denver's 'Sunshine on My Shoulders Makes Me Happy'(mostly grunged away). I know the song's a bit daggy but it's how Bella feels about sunshine & certainly how she felt in the meadow with Edward. There's not much yellow in digi design land so this kit makes a refreshing change & the elements are so pretty - gingham & daisies & more daisies! Elements will be here soon.

Twilight Meadow Elements

Delighted that you like it! Here come the elements, a magical mix of ferns, foliage, flutters, frogs & frames, drops, rocks, moss & a moss covered log (the poetry teacher in me is outa control today!) Many of the elements are unique. Click preview to see detail.

I laughed when Binty said that Bella would complain about this kit being 'too green'. It is, but you'll be able to use this greenery over & over again. The colours are coming in two Add-ons, 'Sunshine' (yellows) & 'Wildflowers' (blues).

PS Brightness & contrast are very important when you are working with lots of elements of the same colour such as clustering the foliage & if your program allows it, tiny adjustments to the hue & saturation with subtle drop shadows will also stop your elements merging together, build depth & make your layout a winner!

PPS Did you notice that I used Binty's Meadow Mask in the preview? It's sooo pretty with such fine details that you can see it was a labour of love. AND she has another treat in store for you, some amazing WordArt that you can use for much more than Twilight (Binty has some great ideas on her blog). I've loved working with Binty. She's such a sweetie!

Twilight Meadow Backgrounds

Design brief to Sue: 'Meadow' must be romantic, magical, moody & mysterious yet reflect the sunshine & the joy of young love.

BIG ask but I do hope you like the result! The backgrounds consist of 5 scenic papers (impressionist painting style) & 3 gradients in moody blues & greens with a touch of yellow to symbolise the sunshine & joy. And there's lots of light streaming through (don't ya just love that?).

Whilst inspired by one of my fave scenes in 'Twilight', there are no specific 'Twilight' components making this kit great for layouts of days in the mountains, picnics, flowers, plants (I'm thinking your elks here, Witchypoo) & much more.

Emerald Rain

'It's the bits Numbbumm rejects, that make Numbbumm the best' (I WISH!!!). Is this John West ad shown around the world or just down under(we've been hearing this slogan forever)? Seriously though, dd tells me that I overmatch EVERYTHING!!! Lots of what I make gets trashed & lots more filed away till it finds its 'perfect match'. Hard drive is groaning so from now on I'll send the misfits to those of you who have the knack of putting bits n pieces together in quirky, creative ways, minus my anal matchy, matchy melodramas.

'Emerald Rain' is pretty, but wearing more formal clothes than the rest of 'Meadow' so I'm giving it to you now. It recolours well & comes with & without drop shadows. The effect in the preview has been created by repeating the 'rain' twice, in 2 sizes.

Flutterflies

I've been playing LEPIDOTERIST (had to use the net for that one) or more like Frankenstein, looking for butterfly body parts & reassembling with sometimes gruesome results. Butterflies are like kisses on a page & the next kit demanded lots of them. The Frankenstein bit comes in 'cause there are lots of wings out there but very few bodies, hence the need for severe surgery. I think you'll love the results. Here are some little orphans that didn't make the kit. They'd love to live at your place.

Scrap Your Bits

Witchypoo has already finished a layout using Nellie's Garden. She's one fast worker & scrapped of all things her daughter's & grandson's ears (check it out in the gallery). That got my family talking about bits that are the same & others that come from out of nowhere. My dd has the same ears as my sister (not a bit like mine). In fact they look alike in many ways except for the height factor - dd takes after her dad & is 6 ft 2'' while my sister barely hits the 5 ft 2'' mark. Here they are together - love them both to bits!

What do I look like? A lot like my sister but a bit rounder, hair the same colour but longer, worn up with a fringe, same fair complexion but my eyes are teal, not blue like everyone else in the family. Wouldn't sis's blouse make a pretty paper!

Nellie's Place DSO Colour Challenge Kit

You all know how I love Kim B! Well I thought that it was about time I supported her DSO Colour Challenge. After all, with the extra time I have right now I should be able to do a good job. WRONG! I flunked, totally bombed out, the Challenge was far too big for me!

Why ? Well despite carefully loading the colours & starting off with all the best intentions, the kit took on a mind (& colours) of its own as it grew in intensity & refused (despite severe scolding) to be reigned in. No soft Kim B palette here (sad sigh) despite the best of intentions!

HOWEVER, 'Nellie's Place' is really pretty, too pretty to be trashed just because it broke a rule or two (or three). Backgrounds are grungy brick walls, a shabby paling fence, cracked & peeling paint & plaster. And there are some really different embellies including a window box full of Nellie's plants, a trellis, junk cluster, a potted plant, mushrooms & great grunge frames (click preview to see detail). They all add up to be a delightfully happy, shabby combo that little Nellie loves & I hope you do too.

PS The idea for 'Nellie's Place' came about because I wanted to try out one of the window frames in a kit & I couldn't be happier with the result. It was really easy to use & looks great against the brick wall background with the light at the side (like preview). I'd love to see what you do with it.

Contemporary Window Frame Frames

Today's frames are simpler for a more contemporary look, in neutral colours that you can use over & over again. I really like the way that you can repeat, block & overlap them (like the preview) for photos with a similar theme.

PPS I'm over feeling sorry for myself. I've got the laptop set up on a high bench which I move to (about every 20 mins) when I can't handle sitting any longer. There's a stool, a big cushion & the wall for me to rest my leg against at the PC & everything is delivered to me (like Lady Muck) so I don't have to do battle with the stairs. Anyway, it's okay when I'm not walking or trying to do anything. Now I'm feeling guilty for having all this digi fun!

How cool are these? They are large for greater versatility, almost a quick page. Try it on the side of your page, partially cut off, cluster a few embellies on & around one corner & voila, you're done! Seriously girls, the current trend for mask & extraction of photos is gorgeous but takes lots of skill & forever!

Twilight: Bella's Bracelet

Here's the last of the Twilight kits for a while. Bella's Bracelet has 10 charms, 4 specific to Bella while the rest would look pretty on almost any layout. The charms are mostly vintage (Bella chose an antique locket for Renesmee & Edward after all is vintage with a capital V). Charms are separate & I popped in a ribbon to thread a charm or two through for a softer look (& a bow for peeps who can't do that).

School went back today minus me. I'm on leave until my knee problem is sorted which means more little freebies, little cause I can only handle short stints at the computer.

PS Specialist is sending me for an MRI to confirm his prognosis. He thinks it's a torn cartilage & a cyst. Anti-inflammatories don't mix with my other meds so I can only take Panadeine & try to be brave!

On the Mend

After chucking a 'wobbly' (no one was listening to my distress) hubby decided that a NEW computer was in order. My son builds computers which makes it a lot cheaper & let's me get exactly what I want. There's still some software to be installed & fonts, brushes, actions etc to be copied over but everything will soon be fine & no data was lost. Thank you so much for your warm comments when I was feeling down.

It seems however, that the universe is plotting against my digi addiction. A problem which I've had with my knee for a while is now so painful that I can't bear to sit at the computer (or stand, walk or anything else). Am off to see an Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Twilight: Bella's Corkboard & Lantern

Yesterday was a shocker!! My computer refused to turn on (just got a blank blue screen) which threw me into hysterics BIG time! I haven't backed up in ages so all the Twilight stuff I've been working on (lots of mini kits) plus lots of new designer tools were lost. Then there was the school stuff - irreplaceable archives I needed for the publication I'm currently working on & a special history of the school issue for our 50th anniversary next year. I truly 'shat' myself & couldn't stop crying.

My son has been looking at my computer this morning. He thinks that the processor has had it but because it's quad core he's been able to disable the problem part. It's still sick but at least it turned on (after 5 tries) so I'm posting this & then starting to back up. Computer will go to hospital next week & I'll be back as soon as I can. Still feel like crying. I was having so much fun designing - now I'll have to do housework!

Unzipping rar files - Rar files are industry standard. Go to Ikea Goddess & in her sidebar you'll find everything you need to know about unzipping them.

How to subscribe - I haven't got a clue (I create the kits & Helen keeps the blog running) but I'm seeing Helen next Monday at the Adobe Roadshow (YIPPEEE!!) so I'll ask her then. For now I suggest you save Numbbumm as a fave & revisit when you need a digi fix!

Flerg's Twilight Kit - Flergs is Twilight obsessed (you'll love the look of her blog) & one of my fave designers. Her Twilight kit is gorgeous, funky & super high quality. Twilight: Bella's Bedroom Backgrounds

Year 8 can talk at length about the controlled colour palette of the movie - blues, greens & greys with tiny touches of red (often added post production) as reminders of the passion, the danger & the whole vampire thing. Twilight isn't a vampire movie in the traditional sense so the colour palette for this mega kit isn't traditional vampire (like most are) but the same as the movie. This will make the kit good for more than 'just' Twilight scrapping.

Here are 6 papers with textures replicating parts of Bella's bedroom - the teal walls, purple bedcoverings & pine furniture. I love the paper in the top right. I'm imagining it be sheets & you can tuck your pics into the covers. I'd love to Photoshop a pic of me with divine Edward & tuck us into bed but hubby would have me committed. Just as well a girl can dream!

Twilight: Bella's Bedroom Fairy Lights

Bella's bedroom is a 'hotch potch' of old furniture, new bed covers, a crammed corkboard & various keepsakes. I love the way it evolves as she adds to it & the cosy glow created by the lights.

These pretty dragonfly fairy lights are part 1 of 'Bella's Bedroom'. There's lots of Twilight stuff out there (including Flerg's gorgeous kit which I just had to have) so I'm trying to do something different. I couldn't decide which glow effect was best so I gave you both, plus a single dragonfly for elsewhere on your page. The lights look dramatic on this dark background but work well on softer colours too AND they have a life beyond Twilight.

Twilight: Bella's Wolf Charm

What a challenge this was (there aren't any little carved wolves in the bargain stores in oz & non on the net), but after lots of experimentation & trashing the end result is a high quality little carved charm. The preview doesn't do the charm justice but I couldn't trash Jacob (too darned gorgeous) so I'm sticking with it! Click preview to see detail.

You'll have to wait a while for the rest of Bella's bracelet (digi extraction is as bad as having a tooth extracted for me) but it is coming. Meanwhile I'm working on Bella's Bedroom & tomorrow's download is very pretty.
